Community

How to find your people in a new town

A long outdoor dinner table is set for a gathering, with a couple standing behind it.

Friendly places still take some effort. Here is where to begin.

When people talk about a welcoming community, they usually mean one that is easy to join. The joining is still up to you, and the good news is that it is simpler than it sounds.

Become a regular

Go to the same café, the same market and the same walking path at the same time each week. Familiar faces turn into hellos, and hellos turn into names.

Give a little time

  • Volunteer for something you already care about
  • Join a club, a choir, a class or a walking group
  • Offer to help at a local event, even for an hour

Shared work is the quickest way to meet people, because you are talking about the task and not about yourself.

Say yes first

Say yes to the first three invitations. You can be choosy after that.

Be patient with the calendar

Plan on a full year before it feels like home: every season, every festival, every holiday at least once. By the second autumn, you will be the one welcoming somebody new.
